The Caduceus
The serpent is one of the most sacred symbols of all times. We find images and myths about serpents everywhere in the world and they often date 6000 years back. They always have been linked with divinity, great knowledge and duality. In fact, it would be more correct to say that his symbolism is more often connected to the overcoming of duality rather than duality itself.
When the Buddha found enlightenment under his tree, the Naga Snake came around him to protect him from demons and distractions that tried to disturb is deep meditation. It is well known that the Buddha has achieved a non dual state of mind.
The principal God figure in the Mayan culture is a Feathered serpent called Quetzalcoatl that came on Earth to save humanity from de illusion of duality. His name means litteraly « Bird-Serpent », from « Quetzalli » meaning Bird and « Coatl » meaning snake. He is here to unite the sky and the earth together and bring back harmony.
In the Indu tradition the serpent is the symbol of the Kundalini (enlightenment) and also the symbol of the greatest God of all, Shiva. Shiva is the first God, he was never born and lived in the void even before time existed, he was a unique light, the only form that existed before everyting else. Shiva is half male and half female. His female half is called Shakti and sometimes they incarnate on earth to live the enjoyment of the sacred union, as man and women.
The Caduceus represents 2 serpents, one Male and the other Female, uniting together in an intertwined position that recalls the embrace of serpents mating together.
